A note from the editor.
Benign AI began as a small set of private notes — written, mostly, in the margins of other things. It was an attempt to put into words a discomfort that had been growing for some time: that the conversation about artificial intelligence was being held almost entirely between the people who build it and the people who govern it, and almost never with the people who are quietly being shaped by it.
That, it seemed, was the wrong shape for the conversation. So this is an attempt at a different one.
The work here is not technical, and it is not policy. It is, more modestly, a place to think out loud — about what we should be able to expect from these systems, what we should refuse, and what kind of relationship between people and machines is worth aiming for.
Nothing here is finished. Everything is open to revision. If you find something useful, take it. If you find something wrong, say so — in the discussion.
